The AERO TRAP and BG-GAT act at different points in the behaviour of the tiger mosquito. The AERO TRAP catches mosquitoes searching for a blood meal, while the BG-GAT catches mosquitoes searching for a suitable egg-laying site. In the case of a tiger mosquito infestation, it is therefore most effective to combine both types of trap.

Traps alone should not be the only measure against tiger mosquitoes. To curb mosquito reproduction as effectively as possible, potential breeding sites in the garden should be regularly cleared or eliminated. The fewer alternative breeding sites available, the fewer opportunities tiger mosquitoes have to lay their eggs outside the BG-GAT.
Breeding sites that cannot be removed or drained can be treated with Biogents HYDRO FILM. The film forms a physical barrier on the water surface and helps prevent the development of mosquito larvae.

Biogents BG-GAT (Gravid Aedes Trap) is a low-cost and easy to use tool that can help you reduce the Asian tiger (Aedes albopictus) and yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti) population in your backyard. These species are day active, very aggressive, and can transmit diseases like dengue fever, Zika, and chikungunya. Important for the effectiveness of the trap is to reduce competitive breeding sources.
In comparison to the AERO TRAP or BG-Mosquitaire trap, it targets a different stage of the mosquitoes: Those mosquitoes that have already bitten and are now searching for a place to lay their eggs which are only a small percentage of those that are host-seeking. Therefore, the BG-GAT catches naturally less mosquitoes than the AERO TRAP or BG-Mosquitaire.

The big advantage of this trap version is that it is passive, which means it does not require power or supplemental attractants like CO2 or chemical lures. This provides great flexibility in deployment and easiness in handling. Also, especially these females that are targeted with the BG-GAT, can be dangerous, as they might carry a virus and could produce about 50 – 100 descendants.

The BG-GAT uses water and oviposition cues to attract female Asian tiger and yellow fever mosquitoes that are looking for a place to lay their eggs. Once in the trap, the mosquitoes are exposed to a sticky surface and die.

Female Asian tiger and yellow fever mosquitoes are attracted by water and oviposition cues and enter the transparent chamber through the black funnel. Once in the chamber, mosquitoes try to escape through the translucent windows where they are captured when they contact the surface of the sticky card. The mesh provides a barrier between mosquitoes and the infused water in the lower chamber. The sticky card in the transparent chamber will kill the mosquitoes.

The BG-GAT trap was developed by Dr. Á. E. Eiras from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil and by Dr. S. A. Ritchie from the James Cook University, Cairns, Queensland, Australia. Biogents produces and distributes the trap under an exclusive license agreement with both universities.
