Question 1

Which mosquito trap is right for me?

Accepted Answer

Which trap is most suitable depends primarily on which mosquito species you want to control and what goal you are pursuing. The level of mosquito pressure, the size of the area to be protected and the question of whether you only want to reduce mosquito bites or additionally curb the reproduction of tiger mosquitoes also play a role.
The Biogents AERO TRAP is suitable for specifically reducing mosquito bites in the garden. If you also want to control other mosquito species or achieve a particularly high trapping effect, the AERO TRAP PLUS with CO2 is the right choice. In the case of a tiger mosquito infestation, combining the AERO TRAP and the BG-GAT can be useful, as the two traps address different behaviours of the tiger mosquito.

Question 2

Which mosquito species do I have?

Accepted Answer

The mosquito species is one of the most important factors when choosing the right trap. The Asian tiger mosquito is mainly active during the day and responds particularly strongly to skin-like odour cues such as Biogents SWEETSCENT. Other mosquito species, for example the common house mosquito or floodwater mosquitoes, are often active in the evening or at night and benefit more from the additional attraction provided by CO2.
If you are not sure which mosquito species is bothering you, the Biogents trap advisor can help you choose.

Question 3

When do I need CO2 for my mosquito trap?

Accepted Answer

CO2 is not essential for every application. If you are mainly bitten by tiger mosquitoes, the AERO TRAP can already be very effective without CO2.
If, on the other hand, you also want to control other mosquito species, particularly those that are often active in the evening or at night, or if you want a particularly high trapping effect, a CO2 trap such as the AERO TRAP PLUS is recommended. CO2 broadens the range of mosquito species that the trap can effectively attract.

Question 4

What is the difference between the AERO TRAP and the AERO TRAP PLUS?

Accepted Answer

The AERO TRAP is the basic solution for reducing mosquito bites and is particularly suitable for moderate nuisance from tiger mosquitoes. It protects an area of up to 300 m².
The AERO TRAP PLUS additionally features integrated CO2 control and is designed for a higher level of mosquito pressure as well as a broader range of mosquito species. With CO2, it can cover an area of up to 700 m².

Question 5

Why isn't a trap without CO2 equally suitable for all mosquito species?

Accepted Answer

Mosquito species differ in their behaviour and in the cues they use when searching for a host. With Biogents SWEETSCENT and its distinctive trapping principle, the AERO TRAP particularly appeals to mosquitoes that respond to human odour cues.
CO2 is an additional long-range cue used by many mosquito species when searching for a host. Adding CO2 therefore makes the trap attractive to a broader range of species.

Question 6

Which trap is particularly suitable against tiger mosquitoes?

Accepted Answer

For reducing mosquito bites caused by tiger mosquitoes, the AERO TRAP is particularly well suited. It imitates human odour and visual cues and catches tiger mosquitoes searching for a blood meal.
If you also want to curb the reproduction of tiger mosquitoes, we recommend combining it with the BG-GAT. The AERO TRAP catches biting tiger mosquitoes, while the BG-GAT specifically targets female tiger mosquitoes searching for an egg-laying site.

Question 7

Why should I combine the AERO TRAP and the BG-GAT?

Accepted Answer

The two traps act at different points in the life cycle and behaviour of the tiger mosquito.
The AERO TRAP catches tiger mosquitoes searching for a blood meal and thus reduces biting pressure. The BG-GAT, on the other hand, imitates a suitable breeding site and intercepts female tiger mosquitoes looking for a place to lay their eggs. The combination can therefore reduce both the number of mosquito bites and the further reproduction of tiger mosquitoes.

Question 8

What role does the size of my garden play?

Accepted Answer

The size of the area to be protected is an important factor when choosing the traps and deciding how many to use. The AERO TRAP is designed for an area of up to 300 m², while the AERO TRAP PLUS with CO2 can cover an area of up to 700 m². The actual effect, however, also depends on the mosquito population and on the layout of the garden.
For larger areas, it can make sense to use several traps. Combining several identical traps extends the area covered.

Question 9

How severe does a mosquito infestation have to be for a mosquito trap to be worthwhile?

Accepted Answer

A trap can be worthwhile even when the mosquito population initially seems moderate, because the aim is not only to catch mosquitoes that are already present, but to reduce the local mosquito population in the long term.
In the case of moderate nuisance from tiger mosquitoes, the AERO TRAP can be a suitable solution. Where there is a strong presence of mosquitoes, or if you want to cover as many different species as possible, the AERO TRAP PLUS with CO2 is recommended.

Question 10

What should I look out for when buying a mosquito trap?

Accepted Answer

Not every mosquito trap works on the same principle. Pay particular attention to:
Which mosquito species are to be controlled?
Is the trap suitable for indoor or outdoor use?
Is CO2 required, or should it be added optionally?
Which area is to be protected?
Should the trap only reduce mosquito bites or also curb the reproduction of tiger mosquitoes?
Does the trap specifically target mosquitoes, or does it also attract other insects using light?
How is the trap operated and what running costs arise from electricity, lures or CO2?
How easy are setup, cleaning and refilling?
Biogents suction traps work with targeted attractant cues and a highly effective trapping mechanism rather than mere deterrence. They require neither insecticides nor UV light and are designed specifically for mosquitoes.

Question 11

Why should a mosquito trap attract mosquitoes specifically instead of simply using light?

Accepted Answer

UV light attracts many different insects and is therefore not specifically targeted at mosquitoes. Biogents traps, by contrast, use targeted attractant cues based on the natural host-seeking behaviour of mosquitoes. This specifically appeals to mosquitoes, while beneficial insects such as bees or butterflies are not drawn in by UV light.

Question 12

Is a mosquito trap on its own sufficient?

Accepted Answer

A mosquito trap can significantly reduce the local mosquito population, but it should be part of a comprehensive strategy, especially where tiger mosquitoes are concerned.
Potential breeding sites such as plant saucers, buckets, rain barrels or other containers with standing water should be emptied, removed or covered regularly. For water sites that cannot be avoided, additional measures such as Biogents HYDRO FILM can be used.

Question 13

How important is the correct placement of the mosquito trap?

Accepted Answer

The right placement is one of the most important factors for trapping success. The trap should be positioned where mosquitoes naturally spend their time: in a shady, damp area sheltered from the wind, close to vegetation and as close to the ground as possible.
With electric suction traps, a distance of at least 5 metres from the terrace or seating area should also be maintained. Even a few metres can make a clear difference, which is why it makes sense to try out different locations.

Question 14

How long does it take for a mosquito trap to work?

Accepted Answer

A mosquito trap does not reduce the mosquito population immediately. It should be set up as early in the season as possible and operated continuously. The traps need about a week to take effect; over the course of the season, the local mosquito population can be reduced progressively.

Question 15

Should the trap run continuously?

Accepted Answer

Yes. For maximum effectiveness, Biogents recommends operating the electric traps 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This way, mosquitoes can be caught continuously before they bite you.

Question 16

Why should I set up the trap as early in the season as possible?

Accepted Answer

The earlier mosquitoes are caught, the less time they have to reproduce. Biogents therefore recommends setting up the traps as soon as the average outdoor temperature exceeds around 15 °C.

Question 17

How many traps do I need?

Accepted Answer

That depends on the size and layout of your property, the mosquito population and the level of protection you want. Several traps can be used for larger areas. Combining different types of trap, on the other hand, is not just about additional coverage: the AERO TRAP and the BG-GAT, for example, act at different points in tiger mosquito behaviour.

Question 18

What matters more when buying a mosquito trap: the price or the trapping performance?

Accepted Answer

The purchase price alone says little about how suitable a mosquito trap actually is. What matters is whether the trap fits the mosquito species, the level of nuisance, the area and the intended use. Running costs for lures, electricity and, where applicable, CO2 should also be taken into account.
A cheaper trap can therefore be unsuitable if it does not effectively target the mosquito species present or is not designed for the desired area.
