A mosquito trap is not a repellent but a sustainable tool for effectively reducing the local mosquito population in the long term. This means that mosquitoes are not primarily kept away, but are specifically attracted and caught by the trap. The aim is to catch the mosquitoes before they reach the areas to be protected.
An effective mosquito trap is characterized by the following features:
- Targeted attraction using insecticide-free attractants and imitation breeding sites
- Highly effective trapping mechanism instead of mere deterrence
- Works without UV light and explicitly attracts mosquitoes, so that beneficial insects are not attracted
- Sustainable effect through continuous population control
- Suitable for outdoor use
If the trap is positioned correctly and operated continuously, it can significantly reduce the local mosquito population.
Protection or population control – the difference between repellents and mosquito traps
If you search online for mosquito repellents, you will find the categories repellent and mosquito trap. These differ mainly in their purpose and duration of effect:
- Repellents keep mosquitoes away from humans for a short time and are particularly suitable for direct, temporary protection.
- Mosquito traps aim to reduce the local mosquito population in the long term by attracting and trapping mosquitoes.
However, the models available on the market vary considerably in terms of their effectiveness. Many commercially available mosquito traps are based on light stimuli, although studies and specialist articles show that UV light hardly attracts biting mosquitoes and can instead kill harmless or beneficial insects. The functional principle used by a mosquito trap is therefore crucial for sustainable mosquito control. Only systems that are based on the actual search and reproduction behavior of mosquitoes can contribute to long-term population control.

Where to place mosquito traps
An important factor in the success of your mosquito trap is its placement: During the day, mosquitoes prefer to stay in protected, damp, and shady areas, as they dry out quickly. These resting places are often located near vegetation or other structures that provide shelter from the wind. From there, they fly to specific hosts to feed on blood. A trap should therefore be positioned where mosquitoes naturally gather and not too close to human habitats:
- at least 5 meters away from patios or seating areas
- protected from direct sunlight or wind
- in damp, shady areas
- near plants
- near rain barrels, drains, or other damp areas
- as close to the ground as possible
It is also worth testing the exact positioning of the mosquito traps for a few days to achieve the greatest possible effect.

In addition, the BG-GAT is a special, electricity-free egg-laying trap that specifically intercepts female tiger mosquitoes during egg-laying, thus preventing the development of new populations.
